Used Truck Checklist

- Check the trucks engine, transmission, rear differential, power steering, and wheel seals for lubricant or coolant leaks.
- Check the condition of the trucks belts, hoses, lines, (including such items as engine belts, the fuel crossover lines, radiator hoses, water lines, air lines, power steering lines, automatic transmission lines, etc).
- Check the trucks power steering for excessive play.
- Check the trucks air pressure and make sure it is building up air fast enough and to the proper level.
- Check tread and wear condition of all tires and.
- Check the trucks wheels and rims for any damage or cracks especially on dump trucks.
- Check the trucks brake shoes and drums for excessive wear or cracks.
- Check the trucks front axle and rear suspension for bad or cracked springs and or worn bushing and pins.
- Check the trucks air tanks for excessive moisture.
- Pay close attention to any frayed wiring and check the trucks battery, if it has to be jumped there could be problems with the truck.
- Make sure all lights are operational.
- Make sure the trucks city and air horns are working.
- Check the wipers and blades.
- Check your windshield and mirrors for visibility and cracks or chips.
- Don’t be afraid to get under the truck to check it out.
- Check the trucks cross members for cracks and missing rivets
- Does the truck have lift axles? Do they raise and lower properly?
- You might even have it put on a dino machine to ensure the engine is sound, this will cost a couple hundred but well worth it.
- Check dump trucks for the bed raising and lowering properly. Is there hydraulic leaks? Does the tailgate lock properly?
- Does the dump trucks PTO engage properly?
- Go with your coveralls and be prepared to spend some time looking at everything don’t allow the salesman to see that your eager to buy the truck! And don’t allow them to rush you after all this is a big investment for your business.
